Marketing as the Engine of Growth

Lina M. Tonk
My career has centered on leading companies through moments where greater growth, market leadership or transformation was possible, but the operating model, positioning or go-to-market execution needed reinvention. As a 3x CMO, I have led brand evolutions, rebuilt demand generation engines, integrated acquisitions, expanded into new markets and repositioned organizations from quiet performers to recognized leaders. Across every chapter, the common thread has been aligning brand, revenue, technology and people around a clear vision for scale.
Marketing, in my view, is not a support function. It is a growth engine. The impact I focus on creating is durable. Stronger positioning in the market, predictable pipeline contribution and teams that believe they can outperform their previous best. Transformation is not about noise. It is about clarity, conviction and measurable growth.
I also believe the strongest teams are built through diversity of experience, perspective and thought. Some of the highest performing organizations I have led were globally distributed teams bringing different market insights, cultural perspectives and problem-solving approaches to the table. Innovation accelerates when teams do not all think the same way.
Modern marketing leaders must operate strategically and operationally at the same time. They must be brand architects and revenue operators. Adaptability is critical as markets evolve, technology shifts rapidly and buyer behavior changes constantly. The most effective leaders combine analytical rigor with instinct built through experience.
Customer outcomes are the foundation of strong brand strategy. Brand is not aesthetics or messaging alone. It is the visible expression of the value customers actually experience. When brand aligns with customer outcomes, growth accelerates. Pipeline quality improves, retention strengthens and expansion becomes more natural because trust is established.
The most formative experiences in my career were stepping into organizations that required rebuilding confidence and direction. Leading through ambiguity, clarifying priorities and restoring belief shaped my leadership style. What continues to motivate me is the opportunity to leave people and companies better than when I arrived.
Some of the most meaningful moments in my career have not been market recognition. They have been watching someone step into confidence, lead through ambiguity and realize they are capable of more than they believed. I care deeply about the legacy we create as leaders, especially for women in leadership. Visibility matters, but creating pathways, sponsorship and belief for the next generation matters even more.
More recently, I have been incredibly energized by the opportunity to serve CMOs and global organizations at Smartling during such a transformational moment in business and technology. Smartling is helping companies expand globally faster with AI-powered translation and localization solutions that deliver the quality, trust and operational scale modern enterprises need. As businesses grow internationally, the ability to create authentic, localized customer experiences quickly and intelligently has become a true competitive advantage.
My edge is integration. I understand revenue metrics deeply and operate with discipline around pipeline contribution, conversion efficiency and return on investment. Data anchors decision making.
I am deeply intentional about how I use the martech ecosystem. Technology should not create complexity, it should create clarity. From CRM to automation to intent data to AI-powered personalization, every tool must tie back to measurable revenue impact. I believe in architecting integrated systems where signal drives action, attribution is transparent and investment decisions are disciplined.
AI is not simply changing marketing execution. It is redefining how organizations operate, make decisions and scale. We are moving from linear marketing systems to intelligent growth systems where AI reshapes how teams prioritize, how buyers engage and how customer experiences are orchestrated in real time.
What excites me most is that this is one of the most creative and transformational moments business and marketing have experienced in decades. As a CMO, I genuinely feel we have an opportunity to make a larger impact than ever before. AI is giving leaders and teams more runway to create, to learn faster, to test ideas more intelligently and to remove operational friction that once slowed innovation. I have been fascinated by learning at every stage of my career, and this era rewards leaders who stay curious, adaptable and willing to rethink how great work gets done.
The companies that win will not be the ones using the most AI tools. They will be the ones redesigning workflows, talent models and decision making around AI intentionally. AI amplifies whatever system already exists. If your strategy is unclear, AI scales confusion. If your positioning is strong and your data is clean, AI accelerates growth.
Leadership requires conviction in your strategy, confidence in your decisions and consistency in your expectations. Excellence is built through discipline and belief. Have the courage to dare greatly. Take smart risks. Stand behind bold positioning. Transformation never comes from playing small.
Take chances on the people doing the work. Invest in them. Develop them. Trust them with real responsibility. The strongest organizations are built when leaders see potential before it is obvious and create space for others to rise.
Lead with empathy. Understand that performance and humanity are not in conflict. They strengthen each other.
Lasting leadership is not about visibility. It is about courage, stewardship and building something meaningful that outlives you. The most important thing we leave behind is not just growth metrics or market share. It is stronger people, stronger leaders and stronger companies because we were there to help shape them.
And that is what makes this moment in marketing so exciting. We are not simply witnessing transformation. We have the opportunity to help lead it.
